In answer to your question:
ODBC stands for Open DataBase Connectivity. It is Microsofts attempt at making a universal data access engine that utilizes plug-ins for various flavors of databases. Theoretically, you could write an app that uses ODBC calls and could then transparently use various source databases, ie. Foxpro, Access, SQL, etc.

In your case, since you're using Delphi, the BDE is a much better solution.

Here's an example of where ODBC does work though: Novell released an ODBC driver for NDS (Novell Directory Services) that allows any report writer or other app that can talk to ODBC to query data from the NDS database. This insulates the programmer from having to use the Novell API's to get to the data.
