What software / files did this occur with? There are no built in assumptions as far as I can remember. I run my SW on E: with no problems. I only use NT, so don't worry about any NT compatability issues.

This is definitely possible. The lower lever classes are not very MFC specific. The two exceptions are the serial port setup and the use of the CString class. I'd like to switch from CString to a STL string type, but I haven't had the time.
