Yes, you need to use some sort of patch from your computer's soundcard to your pre-amp, either analog or digital (if your soundcard/preamp supports it, I use a toslink digital out to my sony db840 and it works great!).

As for the selection switching, it's not automatic by cdj, but you can make it that way. As you've figured, you'll need to create an ir device file for your pre-amp so that cdj knows how to switch the sources. I can't help much there...but this board is a vast resource and if you search the archives and the slink-e help files, I'm sure you'll find some good info.
