They key to Steve's problem is to create a IR rx device file for the airboard keyboard's IR commands. I have the same keyboard (in use on my HTPC, and another system), and when creating a device file for my pronto (for x10 lighting stuff) I've seen the keyboard ir events show up both when sony and yamaha templates are loaded.
It should be pretty easy to create a device file for the keyboard, then to map those to events. I'll play around with it if I have time.
