MP3 Devices

Can anyone explain to me how the CDJ mp3 output devices work. I'm using a Midiman Audiophile 2496 Sound Card, but can only seem to route CDJ output to it if I set the windows control panel multimedia preferred device to the S/PDIF output on this card. Then it doesn't matter what output device I select in CDJ. (Since, I assume, windows is then handling routing the output regardless of CDJ.)
