The crossfading becomes expensive, to do it right requires an asynchronous sample rate converter for at least N-1 of the channels you want to mix as well as a DSP. It would probably add $200 to the unit.

Currently I'm using a sound chip built onto the mother board of my lunchbox computer that has a digital in and out on a header. I take these TTL level signals and run them into some Toshiba TORX173/TOTX173 TOSLINK optical modules as well as to a transformer coupled coaxial output. I also built a coax input, but I'm not using it.
