digital input happens to be active straight to the output.

There wouldn't be more than 1 active input at a time. Damn, unless a device spits out a stream of 0's. Hmmm... I know some do. I guess that makes it tougher to detect which

input to choose...

I thought of this too, and it appears to be possible with the devices I have, but I'm not sure it will work for everything.
