I have another massive overkill solution, but it may help you think of something easier, or it may help in general.

Lantronics (www.lantronics.com) makes ethernet-to-serial adaptors which are pretty nifty -- they even come with client software to make a PC think a serial port is local when it's really anywhere on the IP network (the Internet, even).

Now, using one of those in conjunction with a wireless ethernet solution would do what you want -- and probably cost over $1000.

Still, thought I'd mention it. The ethernet-to-serial things are pretty cool, anyways -- I'm avoiding the whole DCOM problem by using one to get to my slinke at home from my PC at work.
