What about one of those RS232 <-> X10 converters? I can't remember how expensive they are, but it might allow you to send signals thru your home wiring.
Also, you mentioned you couldn't use IR. Do you mean it's not line-of-sight or is there another reason. If it's only line-of-sight, you might be able to use an IR extender; they're not very expensive.
