Whole House Audio & TV Control

Hi All:

I'm interested in purchasing a Sony 200CD Carousel and a SLINKE to feed audio to my whole house and I'd love some advice. The competitive product I'm looking at is Escient's TuneBase100 (not out yet, but expected to cost $1500, which is a little rich for my blood). This box is a closed system that acts like CDJ, but provides all of the hardware, displays and organizes CDs on a TV screen, and comes with a special remote to control the system.

To build a more open, cheaper system, I would like to purchase a SLINK-E, a *super* cheap PC with a TV video card to sit in my entertainment center, allowing me to control my CD player from any TV in my house. I will have IR ports and A/V wiring throughout the house, and I have an ethernet jack connected to ADSL on the panel behind my entertainment center for net connectivity. I have the following questions:

- Has anybody done this? Is it even realistic?
- Can the CDJ software be controlled from the remote control/IR port of the CD player?
- Is the SLINK-E software "thin"? Will it run on a cheap, low power/RAM PC?
- Are there any forseeable drawbacks to this plan?
- I am still debating wether to get a Yamaha receiver or a Sony one. Is there any benefit to owning both a receiver and CD player from Sony? Anything I can use the PC and SLINK-E to control on the receivers (such as the STR-DE825)?
