The deal is this:

CDJ verifies it has the right disc every time it loads it, but it doesn't read the entire set of TOC data. Instead, it just looks at one track and compares the playing time to that in the library. Crude, but quick.

Doing the disc search is a different story. CDJ will load the full TOC data and look up the CDDB ID in your library. In this case, CDJ will not find the disc you modified the ID for anymore and will go out to CDDB and get it again.
