Did you have any luck with the Win98 machine? Here is a little more information on what happens when an X10 command hits the slink-e server on my machine:

About five seconds after sending the command, the following Win98 error appears:
SLINKESERV caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff76723.
