I finally switched from the Enterprise version to the Professional version of VB6 and that did the trick. I can't say exactly what it was, but I suspect that maybe my enterprise copy of VB was somehow bad, although I didn't have any other problems except with the slinkx.

At any rate, it's working great now without any problems whatsoever, and I've already written a web interface for it to control my equipment including a Sony Handycam, with zoom in and out, which is exactly what I needed it to do.
