Touch Screen Displays

Does anyone know how touch screen displays drivers work? Can they simulate mouse actions or do they have to be custom applications? I was considering installing a wall mounted touch screen with a hidden PC running CDJ. It might work if the touch screen had drivers for mouse actions (like double tapping for clcking) but would not if it had to be custom software.
