Right. If you look at some of the serial cabling docs I wrote, I suggest putting each of the three needed serial signal lines (RX,TX,CTS) on a seperate pair in the CAT-5 cable to reduce capacitance. You could definitely use RS-485, but I don't know how cheap the ones are which also encode handshaking signals (which you would need for the Slink-e).
