Perhaps you realize this, Brooks, but S-video is not a digital output stream. If it were a stream of bits perhaps Colby's box could handle it, but it's an analog stream, albeit of slightly higher quality than composite video. Ditto with composite video flowing over coax cable--it's all analog. Pretty much all video streams in current-generation equipment are analog. Even digital camcorders produce analog output so current TVs can read it. Some of them will output bits through a Fire Wire port, and a few PCs can accept that data stream, but I have yet to see a TV or a VCR with a Fire Wire input. If they exist now it's not at mass-market prices.
