That little gizmo is the IR puck that talks to the LCD remote that came with the unit.

Basically, I think it converts IR to S-link traffic.

I have an CX88ES. So far, it's been pretty disapointing (It's skipped since I bought it, and I've had the guts replaced twice under warranty).

I want to write some code that watches the S-link buss for the button press on the bi-directional remote to download track listings. If I could see this, than I'd be able to insert tracks for CD's that aren't CD-text enabled.
