I don't see anything wrong with what you are suggesting. The only thing you need to make sure of on the DXS is that the output going to the MD is set up so it will not auto switch to the input which is connected to the MD. Otherwise, when your MD starts recording, the MD's output becomes active to function as a digital monitoring loop and causes the DXS to switch to the MD input.
