Just a note, this maybe just part of your problem.

When buying a 1/8 MONO cord from Radio Shack, they are normally attenuated. This means they put a small resistor inside that slightly shorts it out. It's enough to stop a Sony player from transfering signals, it was designed for others brands like JVC. This can also make the slinke light turn orange. If you can't find an unattenuated mono cord you can use a STEREO one, they are never attenuated and work just fine using only one channel.
