If everything were combined into a single tree structure then the displayed window would just reference the database beneath. There would be no reason why you couldn't open two (or more) windows onto the same database... as long as the system was written not to expect sole ownership..
The main difference between virtual albums and playlists is where they're stored. VAs are simply playlists that are stored in the library database. By storing them in the database then the user only needs one set of editing etc.. tools rather than two. There would be no loss of flexibility.
