I thought the following was cool (I'm not sure anyone
else did). I integrated slinke with voice control to
allow control of everything, The core app was based
on a background MCI control that allowed the entire
screen to be a pass through of the video overlay. I
found that voice control although cool was pretty much
useless in the KPW environment (Kids Pets Wife) or
with Crash Test Dummies Cranked full volume. I have
mostly abandoned the voice side, and gone to
intelligent pop ups. I have a playlist popup that
allows me to select an audio playlist, a video
playlist that allows selection of channels, a radio
playlist that allows selection channels. Selection of
a source switches the receiver to that choice. I am
working on a source profile as well (ie if selection
is TV, and it is x, do this with volume, do this with
lighting, etc) To do this I am working on logging all
activities to a database. This will require a data
model that captures the right information: date, time,
relation of actions, etc. In theory, this will make
the interface tune to me (Sort the channel lists by
use, or use at time x) Optionally it might also list
options for activity popups(I tell it I want news, and
it will give me a list of options (NPR radio, ABC,...
or I choose movies, and it give me my DVD and tape
catalog, as well as options from satelite)

Some of what I want requires a persistent INTERNET
connection (for listings of choices for channel
content).

That is it for the moment. All this crap as defined
is implemented, or in process w:
Slinke
VB 6
cm11a
cheesy 8 in 1 multiremote
Yamaha amp
A throw away machine:Cyrix 233 w/ ATI all in wonder

Current issue: Time and stability of machine (My wife
will not use it if it ever crashes (I understand this)
I am not sure of the cause of the stability problem,
I think it may be a hardware problem, so I am
experimenting w/ diff components.
