[slinkelist] RF RS-232 devices

If you have a base PC plus a laptop, you can run slinkesrv on the base and
CDJ on the laptop and use an 802.11 wireless connection between them --
that's similar to what I do. Now that Colby's solved the DCOM stability
problems, this works great.

Over the 802.11 connection, you could alternatively run VNC and remote
control the server. The VNC configuration can take advantage of CDJ's MP3
integration, but DCOM can handle different client/server screen resolutions.

Also, if you have broadband or use some sort of Internet connection sharing,
you can browse the net from your wireless laptop. You can buy a pair of
wireless cards plus a PCI adapter for about $400. If you run Windows 2000,
be sure to closely check compatibility on both the wireless cards and PCI
adapter. Several dozen vendors make 802.11 wireless products -- the only
interoperability concern is between multivendor access points, which
shouldn't affect you.

Gregg,
Thanks. But what I am looking for is a box that will allow me to
connect my Slink-e box to my pc using wireless rather than a physical
cable. I would like to have my pc (or laptop) in one room and the Slink-e
box attached to my home theatre system in another room withou any wires
between them.

thanks.

Kevin,
There's a million I/O cards available out there that do RS232,485 etc.
Mostly ISA bus, PCI bus cost more and are not as plentiful. This stuff is
not really for beginners and maybe you're not.
Most you would have to write code for, either resident on your PC or
there's "intelligent" I/O bus cards with their own cpu, ram,etc and come
with their own SDK (software dev kit ) --around 150-250 US$/card,
400-950US$ for the SDK. SDK's cost more than the cards......, depends on
your abilities and some offer stripped down student type SDK's for free.
They work really well if your needs are simple.
Search for "intelligent I/O" or "RS232" on any search engine. ISA bus is
getting obsolete, when considering a new box, seems you only get one ISA
slot these days on the new mother boards.
Gregg

Anyone know of any of these devices and where they may be obtained? I
basically do not want to have the slink-e physically connected to my pc.

Thnaks
