Sony protocol spces state that the duration of a single IR message (non repeated) is approximately 45 miliseconds. Typically the text of the message, the IR data, is very short with the majority of the time being in the "Sleep" time that Colby refers to. If you use a sleep time of 45 miliseconds the system should be able to distinguish between two successive commands. There is no such thing as too long a sleep time except in certain multi key sequences like channel setting where some systems will time out and not require an enter command.
