How are disc numbers stored?

When I view the text file of the CD library, I can't figure out how the disc number as stored in the player is represented. Can you let me know the method used?
Also, when I want to play an MP3 file I would like to have the receiver automatically switch the input source, and then back again when done. How can I do that using the infrared unit? (no slink on the receiver)
