S-Link Audio/Video Incompatibilty

When I plug my DVD or VCR into the S-Link ports I get a continuous yellow light. Based on the postings on the s-link BBS it appears that Audio and video s-link are not compatible. It seems that buying all sony components does nothing for me and the s-link hype is mainly BS. I have seen that the VCR might be able to be connected to the Control-S port, but I am currently using that port on the VCR for the "cable mouse". In fact this is the only way I can control my General Instruments,(jerrold), cable box from the worthless remote on my DA50ES Reciever. Any Ideas on a better hookup.
