Mike,
I have a cheesy hardware/software package from Gold Disk which does limited offline editing. It has a LANC connector and an IR transmitter cabled up to a serial port. The software is able to read my Sony camcorder's counter, so it must be coming through the LANC. I think Pinnacle owns the product now. I have not used it in years, as I am more into digitized video editing now.
