I was having a "play" with my 270 a little while ago and noticed that holding down one of the player controls whilst turning the player power on triggered what appeared to be a self-test/diagnostic. I can't remember what I pressed and didn't investigate it too much, but it might be worth an investigate before you lose the unit for a few weeks. I'd make sure that all the discs are unloaded before you try it.
