Well...I have the 835 and use it with the 300 changer.

One thing that I don't hear a lot of people doing here is "mapping" out the behaviors. I took a piece of paper and drew out how I wanted to have the equipment behave and then what piece of control would do the behavior.

There is a lot of behavior that can be done by the device itself, the SLinke or even an intelligent remote. You just need to decide how things will work when you want to do a given action.

I set up my 835 to do it's own auto input switching via Control AII. This way, all I have to do is have the Slinke generate CD commands.

Am I missing something or did I not understand your question completely?
