DXS Not Responding To Remote

Having a problem with my DXS unit. The display shows a row of dim boxes at the top and nothing else. The unit won't respond to the remote at all, even though I have tried going through the configuration steps several times to set the remote up as VCR2 (setting it up as VCR1 and VCR3 don't work either). So I have no way to enter setup mode on the DXS. Killing and restoring power to the unit does nothing.

Despite its inscrutable display, the DXS appears to be auto-switching all outputs to play the most recently started input (that was the mode I had it set to before this problem appeared out of nowhere). However it is switching unreliably, which is also new--it doesn't always pick up a newly started CD player.
