Creating TX/RX Device Files

I just got my slink-e and have been reading the archives of the bbs and the mailing list. I've seen this question asked a few times, but I couldn't find an answer.

If the manufacturer of your remote is not listed in the device files directory, how do you get the pattern information that's necessary to create your own TX/RX device file? The on-line help stops at the exact moment this subject is discussed. I've done some research and it seem like some have used a pronto to get the zero, one, start, stop and pause timing values. (I don't have a pronto.) Is there any other way?

I'm really curious about this because I'm integrating the slink-e into my home automation system and plan on using it as the main IR controller/router. Eventually all of my equipment would be controlled through a web front-end that spits out commands to the HA software which would control the slink-e (and the x10 controller). Most of this is already finished except for the device file part.

Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I'm close to getting this working, but I'm not there yet. Also a thanks to Barry Gordon for some of the great IR information that is currently available on the web.
