[slinkelist] RE: Xantech IR (simonmason@rcn.com)

I have had some success with the Circuit diagrams on the web site, I am
currently waiting for more information from Colby, if Nirvis are not going
to provide a solution in the foreseeable future I might be prepared to front
the development costs of a complete multi-zone Xantech IR Interface. I must
stress that I too would much rather buy a solution and only go down the
development route if there is no other choice.

It's time for my monthly request for someone to update us on
the Xantech to slink-e IR conversion. The wiring on the nirvis
web site is beyond me so I am looking for someone to develop
something like this and sell it. I am willing to pay (as are
others).

I'll second that comment (really cool). I have my Slink-e in the basement
and I have a HomeLink(telephone) set up so I can just plug my laptop into
any phone outlet and turn on the music, or the lights, etc

Max - I've gotten this to work (on Win95). I remember the dcomcnfg message
you mentioned. I had to switch the Win95 system to start using multiple
user profiles - but I did all that from the Win95 Control Panel (I think its
the "users" applet?).

Its been a few months, and I'm using NT (2K) more and more, so I can't give
you chapter and verse - but I know it works peer-to-peer - no NT server
needed - which seemed to be your main question. By using dcomcnfg and the
instructions you mentioned, you are setting "no security" around the slinkx
COM component - so no NT server is needed to do the authentication. True,
win95/98 can't do that authentication for DCOM, but it won't need to once
you follow the instructions and "turn off" security around the slinkx
component. Hope that helps. It is really cool when it works. It lets you
run CDJ on your "desktop" with SlinkX running on your "server" someplace in
the A/V closet or basement.

Subject: [slinkelist] Novice question

I have just started looking into controlling a CD-changer with a PC and was
wondering if one of the "fancy" serial-to-miniplug cables (e.g., s-linke or
s-converter) is required to use the PC software. I have a basic
serial-to-miniplug cable (not even sure what piece of equipment it came
with), and was wondering what would happen if I tried to use CDJ or
DiscJockey with it. Thanks for any help.
