I use an Audio Alchemy DTI for an SCMS defeat and it works great. Cost me $100 for the box (in perfect condition, including the manual) and about an hour to perform a few simple circuit modifications.

I found the DTI in less than a day by posting to rec.audio.marketplace. Only the original DTI will work. The circuit mods involve nothing more than cutting three traces and soldering three wires. I have the details if you're interested. (I'm as far from a hardware guy as you can get--so if I can do it, anyone can.)

Note that even without the mods, the DTI will operate as an SCMS defeat (as long as any subsequent recordings are made through the DTI) but won't pass start IDs. The mods enable the start IDs and allow unlimited copies of the recorded CD no matter what.
