I think I found the problem.
My Niles infrared receiver was located in the afternoon direct sunlight. This was causing the Niles system to send constant IR codes to the IRx0 port of the slink (through a Niles microflasher placed over the slink IRX0 port). Now that I've moved the Niles remote IR receiver out of the sun, everything seem to work fine for a sustained period.
